For a long time the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so might boost the credibility of the group. The silence is no longer a viable option.

What is Evolution?


Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which may result in variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over many generations the changes could lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with traits that are advantageous survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. Over time, this differential reproduction can result in the creation of entirely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. As time passes the genetic variability could cause the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. The shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed on to future generations.

The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe and life on earth and has been rigorously tested and confirmed over the course of many years. Many people, including religious leaders, believe in the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't contradict religious beliefs because it only addresses physical objects, events, and processes.

In reality many religious individuals have come up with ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolutionary theory. For instance, some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution, and that humans share an ancestral connection with other animals.

It is essential that science educators stand up for teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in some countries around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses and the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.

Although these are alarming developments, it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reason for this is various reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing medications or developing new medicines, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a deep religious belief in God and want to know how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.

They reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and allow the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they would remove references to evolution from their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has achieved its first victory in eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The next step is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students.
